You know you can customize them, right? Take a look at what I did here and here. Let me know if you need any pointers.
Oh, and here's an excellent resource: Blogger Buster.
According to Blogger, I can only customize them if I host them on Blogspot. But I assume you've found a way?
I publish on my own domain names purchased through GoDaddy.com, but I still use Blogger as the engine. I do all of my template design & layout work on blogger.com.
If you go to you dashboard, click on "Settings," then on the "Publishing" tab. This should have instructions on how to publish via Blogger but on a custom domain.
Then, you can select a template as a starting point. You can add, arrange and edit the page elements, change colors, and you can even play with the HTML.
