Is it a recent development, or is the popularity of the Christmas song "Dominick the Donkey" something I've managed to miss over my 36 years? I'd not heard of it until last week, and now I can't escape it. What the heck?

The donkey song was pretty popular on New York's Z100 (Top 40 blowtorch) for several years in the 90s -- during its "nothing but alternative music" phase, it was the only Christmas song it would play during the holidays.

Dumb trivia fact: my brother-in-law's family owns about 10-12 albums from the guy who performed "Dominick" (forget his name).
